November 2015 – Sarah Nagy and Geoff Peat
Sarah broke the W40 Course Record at the Sunnybrook 8K, won the Provincial Championships in Etobicoke (beating the W30’s and W35’s), and won the Canadian Cross Country Championships as first woman overall.
Geoff was the highest AG% scorer at the Nationals – winning the M50’s. He was also the highest AG% score at Sunnybrook and was part of the Team that broke the Course Record.
They scored to help the Huskies win the Breslin Cup.
October 2015 – Dawn Hamel
W60 Dawn Hamel ran a 1:33:58 in the Waterfront Half Marathon on October 18th. She broke Molly Turner’s 1:35:14 CAN Record. She was first of 69 W60’s. Dawn also had the highest female age grading at the Don Farquharson 4K cross country race – only bettered by one male.
Marie-Josee Le Jour broke the World Record in the Throws Pentathlon at the World Masters Championships in Lyon. She also won Gold in the Discus, and Bronze in the Hammer and Weight Throw. Earlier in the month, MJ competed in the Discus at the PanAm Games
M80 Emil Muller broke the CAN record in the Hammer by 5m
W60 Kris Kozell broke a 22 year old CAN in the 5000m Racewalk
M60 Ward Hazen broke the 100mH CAN record by almost 2 seconds
Lynn has been our Road Race Director for several years
She works tirelessly year-round on our Road Race Championships
to include some of the biggest and best races around the province.
She sets up the OMA booth at races and is the face of the OMA to a multitude of roadrunners. Besides that, she is the Race Director of several races as well as a fine runner – most recently in the Cabot Trail Relay.
Krista was the third woman in the Rotterdam Marathon, finishing in 2:29:37 – qualifying for the Olympics next year … all this after suffering a devastating injury last year.
Keijo was the first M75 at the Boston Marathon – finishing in 3:35. A few days later, he ran a 22:56 5K.
Geoff was third age graded scorer at Taylor Creek and 2nd at the Don Farquaharson (84.39 and 82.65) and 3rd AG at Sunnybrook on Nov.2 (83%). He was 13th overall, 5th AG in Canadian Championships at 80.95 and helped his club to 1st place team in M50. At the Ontario Championships he was 2nd in his age group and 3rd in overall AG with 87%.
Derek was 5th overall in Canadian Championships, 2nd in his age group, and 7th overall in AG with 80.21. And as coach of the Newmarket Huskies, he led them to their 8th Breslin Cup win. He also won his age group at the Ontario Championships and was 4th overall in AG with 85.04%.
Jerry was 21st overall at the Canadian Championships, 1st in his age group and was 1st overall AG of Masters (male/female) in Canadian Championships at 84.48 – (limping the last 400m with a pulled hamstring). At the Ontario Championships he was 1st in his age group and 2nd overall in AG with 89.21%.
Together, along with Troy Cox, they were the top Ontario scorers in Vancouver – winning the Gaat Trophy (photo) by only 0.1%
September 2014 – Steve Boyd
M50 Steve Boyd (orange top) had a 15:55 finish at the Canadian 5K Championships on Sept 7th in Toronto. That is a 92.8% AG score. He missed Jerry Kooyman’s 9 year old CAN record by 4 seconds!
August 2014 – John Kasperski
M70 John Kasperski has won multiple medals in the throws since coming back after double hip replacement. He won a Gold, two Silvers, and a Bronze medal at the NCCWMA Championships in Costa Rica
June 2014 – Maureen Teixeira
Maureen Teixeira is 72, and did her first sprint events ever (100m and 400m) at our OMA Championships! She was inspired by a video and article about Olga Kotelko and a quote from C.S. Lewis, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” With Olga’s recent passing, it is very fitting this month to honour someone starting track like Olga did much later in life. Like Olga, Maureen is a retired teacher. She kept fit playing tennis, as well as doing yoga and Pilates. Even more inspiring, she has had a hip replacement due to osteoarthritis, and has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro!
Marie-Josée Le Jour set a World Record in the W35 Throws Pentathlon at the Toronto Track & Field Centre with an incredible 4,047 pts. Her series was hammer – 48.97m, Shot – 12.38m, Discus – 46.09, Javelin – 30.29m and Weight – 16.56m. She also set a Canadian Record in the Weight Throw of 16.77m.
April 2014 – Doug Smith
The OMA Board of Directors wishes to honour our President Doug Smith as the AOTM for April 2014, in recognition of his unrelenting hard work during the past indoor season organizing and running the indoor mini-meets and championships, negotiating to get the PanAm stadium for our OMA Outdoor Championships (which unfortunately failed through no fault of Doug’s effort on our behalf), photographing athletes (especially Canadians) at the WMA Championships, preparing for the outdoor season meets, keeping members updated on our website and with newsletters, also while training and competing in his own events.
W60 Karla Del Grande had a great meet at the World Masters Indoor Championships in Budapest – 2 Golds and 2 Silver medals. She ran 28.23 in the 200m – breaking the World Record (photo) She won the 60m in 8.57 – breaking the World Record. Karla placed second in the 400m, breaking the World Record in 67.13 Along with Wendy Alexis, Susanne Lauridsen, and Carol Lafayette-Boyd, she won the Silver medal in the W55 4X200m Relay in a new CAN record of 2:03.37 Karla also broke the CAN record in the 50m at the Canadian Masters Championships
W60 Karla Del Grande and M80 Ed Whitlock share the honours this month. Karla broke the World Record in the 200m in 28.59

November 2013 – Geoff Peat
M50 Geoff Peat had a terrific cross country season; he had the top Age Graded score at the Sunnybrook 8K, the second best AG% at the Ontario Championships in Delaware, and the top Ontario AG% score at the National Championships in Vancouver – where he was the M50 Canadian Champion. He also led the Newmarket Huskies to their winning the Jim Breslin Cup.
October 2013 – W60 Karla Del Grande
She broke the World Records in the 100m* (13.30), the 200m (28.11) and the 400m (66.24). The old marks were 13.75, 28.54, 66.69. * the 100m probably won’t be ratifies as the photo timer had problems and there was no wind reading) (photo of the 200m Final)
September 2013 – M85 Manuel Teodoro and M80 Ed Whitlock
Manuel, of the London Pacers, has set three Canadian road race records since the end of August; 10 Mile (2:07:04), 5K (34:25), 10K (1:09:39) and 15K (1:45:40)
Ed ran his hometown Milton Half Marathon in 1:38:11 – which is 97.1% age class grade. He set a new ARRS world record for M80.
Don won the Ontario Masters Decathlon Championships with 6044 pts. That is 2nd on the all-time Canadian M50 Decathlon soring list.
Karla broke three W60 Canadian Records – in the 100m, 200m and 400m at the Ontario Masters Championships. She also broke the old CAN in the 200m at the Canadian Championships in Regina, into a strong headwind.
Karla was selected for her performance at the Asian Community Games in Toronto – where she broke two Canadian Records. Karla ran the 100m in 14.07. The old CAN was 14.31 held by Carol Lafayette-Boyd SK set in 2004. She ran the 200m in 29.28, breaking Carol’s CAN of 29.37 set in 2002.
May 2013 – W40 Lioudmila Kortchaguina and W50 Kristen Dajia
Lioudmila ran the Ottawa Marathon in 2:33:10.2 (May 26) breaking the W40 Canadian Record of 2:39:35. She hit the A Olympic standard, just not the 2:29 Canadian A standard (no Canadian woman has in the last 5 years). She has the top ranking for 2013 and her time would have been 3rd Canadian woman in 2012….at the age of 41. (photo courtesy photorun.net)
Kristen competed at the Throwers Club meet at the Toronto Track & Field Centre on May 11th – breaking three CAN Records. She threw the Hammer 41.25m (old CAN 37.75) , Weight Throw 13.04m (old CAN 12.52) and Throws Pentathlon 3,533pts (old CAN 3235).
April 2013 – W35 Krista DuChene
Krista won the Canadian Half Marathon Championships in Montreal on Sunday in 1:12:28 – That mark breaks Jaqueline Gareau’s CAN record of 1:14:13 from ’89….24 years ago!

Team Ontario broke the M80 World Record in the 4X400m Relay at the Canadian Masters Indoor Championships on March 17th. They finished in 6:06.23- breaking the World Record of a previous Canadian Team of 6:34.65 (L-R)Earl Fee (Mississauga), Ray Wardle (Nepean), Bill Thompson (Hamilton), and Ed Whitlock (Milton). A true Ontario team!
Lynn Kobayashi of the University of Toronto Track Club broke the Canadian Indoor 5000m record twice in February – finishing off with a 21:48 She broke the record the first time by 4 minutes!!
Beth of the Toronto Olympic Club was the top age graded, male or female, scoring finisher in 3 out of 4 cross country events, including the Provincial Championships (2nd to Jerry Kooymans at Sunnybrook). She scored; Taylor Creek – 90.2%, Farquharson – 85.1%, Sunnybrook – 87%, Kingston – 87.9%.

Jerry broke the CAN 5K Road Record – running 16:27 at the Syracuse Festival of Races 5K
He scored a 95.01% Age Grade – his highest score ever!
Jerry also scored the highest Male AG% at the Don Farquharson 4K

Elizabeth Hill of Seeleys Bay ON scored 3235 points in the Throws Pentathlon at the NCCWMA/Canadian Championships in Saint John – breaking Denise Clement’s CAN record of 3115 pts
July 2012 – W55 Karla Del Grande and M35 Zoltan Sara
OMA Vice President Karla Del Grande was the 100m and 200m Ontario Champion. At the age of 59, she broke her CAN record of 27.83 in the 200m at the Flying Angels meet on July 8th with a time of 27.74. She set the old record in Lahti when she was 55! She was part of a 4X100m Relay team that broke the W45 ONT record with a 57.82. Karla also broke the ONT 400m record with a 64.89 at the Asian Games.
M35 Zoltan Sara broke his own CAN record in the High Jump with a mark of 1.96m at the OMA Championships. He had the old mark of 1.90m that he set at the World Championships in Sacramento last year.
Mike finished in third place at the AC Canadian Championships in Calgary with a Discus throw of 51.40m. He just missed his ONT and CAN record throw of 51.72 set at the OMA Championships last year.
Garry smashed FOUR CAN records at the Throwers Club Meet in Stoufeville ON on May 19th. Hammer – 21.40m (old record 18.85m Howard West June 16, 2003) Shot Put – 8.44m (old record 6.63m Jim Murray Aug 24, 2006) Discus – 19.41m (old record 17.95 Karl Trei July 1999) Throws Pentathlon – 3,877pts (old record 2,952pts Jim Murray July 31, 2005)
Gaby (center on the podium) jumped 2.80m in the Pole Vault and Ovi had a 1.85m mark in the High Jump.
Brantford’s Krista DuChene was the 1st woman in 1:47:03 at the recent Around the Bay 30K in Hamilton. That breaks the W35 CAN Record of 1:53:42 held by Cindy New at the race in ’96.
