M80 Ed Whitlock ON won the 5000m in 21:02.38 at the Ontario Masters Athletics Championships at Varsity Stadium on Sunday. Ed broke Ed Benham’s 21:57 record by almost a minute! The M80 record has stood for 23 years. The mark broke the existing CAN record, set by Les Leyland BC in 1997 by over 2:30. It also broke the 26:41 ONT record held by Odino Soligo (’03)
Ed continued his assault on the record book four hours later when he won the 1500m in 5:59.81……that’s less than a second off the WR held by Yoshimitsu Miyauchi JPN (5:59.11). It did break Maurice Tarrant BC CAN record of 6:37 that he set last year. It also broke Robert Comber’s 7:12 ONT record. Ed said that the 5000m World Record had taken something out of his 80 year old legs !! You think ? 🙂
M35 Zoltan Sara ON broke the CAN record of 1.82m in the High Jump with a 1.85m mark. The record was held by Winchester Johnson SK (1998). He also broke the ONT record held by Joe Dennis in 2009 and the 1.75m Meet Record held by Dave Rudichuk (’90)
M40 Mike Ransky ON broke the CAN and ONT records of 50.70m in the Discus with a 51.72m performance. The records have stood since 1983!!
M45 Peter Ingleton ON put the Shot 12.99m – braking Danny Yoisten’s 11.95m ONT record (’09). Later, Peter won the Discus with a 39.59 mark – breaking Richard Parkinson’s 33.35 ONT record (’09). Peter’s Shot also breaks one of the oldest records on the books – the 12.78 that Len Olson USA put it in 1979 – that stood for 32 years!
M40 Kevin Lake ON cleared 4.30m in the Pole Vault, breaking Vlad Kostic’s 4.10 ONT record that has stood since 1999.
M60 Brock Pullen ON threw the Javelin 36.50m – just a bit further than Jean-Pierre Mayer’s 36.22 ONT record set in 2009 – before he moved to China.
M30 Shane Firth ON won this 400m in 51.50 – breaking Neal Palomino’s Meet Record of 55.74 set in 2004. Lawrence Williams (in red) won the M40 and Mike Sherar won the M45 division.
W55 Rita Quibell ON broke Jean Horne’s 2:50.6 Meet Record in the 800m that Jean set in 1988 – 23 years ago. Rita ran 2:41.95, just behind Duncan Greenshields in a very close finish.
M60 Richard Lech ON (far right) ran 18.18 in the 100m Hurdles – breaking Bill Townsend’s MR of 18.4 set at the championships in 1988
M45 JP Xu won the 5000m Racewalk in 23:58.17 – just breaking Nil Lavalee’s 23:59.79 MR set in 2005
